Independent country music project Wild West Ballads has released its latest single, Happily Heartbroke, Pour Me One More Empty Glass, a clever country parody that transforms the genre’s familiar themes into a unique comedic experience. Created by Colorado-based songwriter and producer Rick Kennerknecht, the song is built entirely from oxymorons, with every lyric intentionally combining contradictory ideas.
The track follows a sincere honky-tonk style, featuring pedal steel guitar, fiddle, upright bass, brushed snare drums, and barroom piano. Despite its humorous concept, the production remains completely straight-faced, allowing the comedy to emerge naturally from lines such as “winning when I lose” and “faithful to the cheatin’ and true to the lie.”
Kennerknecht explained that the song was inspired by country music’s tendency to find meaning in emotional contradictions. By exaggerating those contradictions, he created a piece that both celebrates and satirizes classic country songwriting.
The single has already received positive attention, with producer Steven Azami praising its “incredibly strong satire.”, Happily Heartbroke showcases a lighter side of Wild West Ballads while maintaining the project’s commitment to creative storytelling and authentic country sounds.
