Rock artist Aaron Koenig returns with his latest single, “Ikigai,” a stripped-down blues-rock track that explores one of life’s biggest questions: how do we find true meaning and purpose?
Inspired by the Japanese concept of ikigai, the song examines the balance between four important elements—doing something you love, being good at it, fulfilling a need in the world, and earning a living from it. Through a simple yet engaging rock sound, Koenig highlights how difficult it can be to bring all four elements together and discover a purpose that feels both meaningful and sustainable.
Musically, “Ikigai” takes a different approach from Koenig’s previous single, “Laser Eyes.” Rather than a large arrangement featuring brass, percussion, Hammond organ, and a female co-vocalist, the new release keeps things raw and focused with a four-piece rock band.
The song was recorded live in the studio, with only Koenig’s vocals and guitar solo added afterward. The accompanying music video, filmed by Artemio Golovko, captures the live recording process and complements the track’s authentic energy.
