With “San Diego Blues,” Tommy G & The Experts make a striking first impression—offering a blues-rock confessional wrapped in sharp wit and smoldering instrumentation. Co-written with legendary bassist Kenny Aaronson (Bob Dylan, The Yardbirds), the track introduces a protagonist who seemingly has it all—Harvard degree, wealth, beauty, and status—but longs for the raw, rainy truth of something more real.
Tommy G’s cool, slightly aloof vocal delivery brings the character’s emptiness to life, layering irony over introspection. The groove rides smoothly thanks to Aaronson’s punchy slap bass and sizzling slide guitar, while Lightnin’ Joe Peterson’s harmonica solo scorches through the middle like lightning in a clear sky. Dale Peterson’s honkytonk piano adds a dose of swagger, giving the song its unmistakable Southern flavor.
“San Diego Blues” teases a promising full-length album coming in June 2025, and sets the tone for the upcoming EP Taking Back the Past, Vol. 1. It’s a confident debut that proves blues can still bite, even in the sun-soaked luxury of San Diego.
