With her signature mix of wit and warmth, Billie-Jo Porter returns with her delightful new single ‘Spring Cleaning’ – a song that turns the simple act of tidying up into a sparkling metaphor for clearing out the cobwebs, literally and emotionally.
Co-written with Canadian songwriter Doris Folkens, ‘Spring Cleaning’ takes something ordinary and relatable – the ritual of cleaning house each spring – and transforms it into a cathartic, toe-tapping reminder that moving on doesn’t always have to hurt.
“Instead of leaning into heavy heartbreak, the lyric turns toward wit and playfulness, showing how humour can soften the edges of letting go” Billie-Jo explains.
The verses weave together tangible domestic images – messy closets, dirty dishes, and dust in the corners – with the bigger task of clearing out the residue of a relationship. This contrast grounds the song in real, lived experience while also giving it a light-hearted,almost tongue-in-cheek quality. The bridge pushes this theme further, offering the lesson that love must sometimes be released, not just held.
Produced by Shane Nicholson (Lyn Bowtell, Tori Forsyth), the track captures the breezy honesty and bounce that have become Billie-Jo’s trademark. “Recording with Shane Nicholson is always a masterclass in honesty and heart – he just knows how to bring the best out of every song” she says.
The addition of flugelhorn and trumpet brings an unexpected brassy joy to the production – a celebratory energy that elevates the track beyond a standard acoustic folk/country tune, giving it an unmistakable bop-like bounce.
Since releasing her debut self-titled album in 2023 – which hit #4 on the ARIA Australian Country Albums Chart and was named ABC Country’s Album of the Week – Billie-Jo has carved out her own vibrant space in the Australian country scene.
Her 2025 single ‘Round and Round’ soared to #1 on the Country Radio Chart, scored high rotation on ABC Country, and was featured on major Spotify playlists including Heaps Country, Country Chill, and Fresh Finds Country. With each release she showcases her knack for pairing optimism with emotional depth – a thread that continues in ‘Spring Cleaning’.
“I grew up in the country and somehow ended up by the sea – so I guess my songs have a bit of both dust and salt in them,” Billie-Jo laughs. “I love the simple things: good people, good stories, and getting creative – I even make earrings out of old guitar strings when I’m off the road. It all feeds back into the music.”
Her connection to community and country shines just as brightly on stage. From Gympie Music Muster, Groundwater Country Music Festival, and Tamworth Country Music Festival, to sharing the stage with artists including Pete Murray, Catherine Britt, Thirsty Merc and Andrew Swift, Billie-Jo’s live performances are joyful, genuine, and full of heart.
“I’m always out playing shows and love getting to new places – and coming back to familiar ones too. That’s the best thing about music for me: the connection. Sharing songs, bringing some joy, and being in a room with people who love music as much as I do, that’s what it’s all about.”
With her second studio album now on the horizon, ‘Spring Cleaning’ feels like Billie-Jo at her most confident – unafraid to mix humour with heart, and introspection with pure fun. It’s the kind of song that lingers long after the last note, leaving you smiling – and maybe a little inspired to clear out your own emotional closets
