“As It Lays” by Jane McNealy — A Smooth Throwback to Urban ’80s Vibes

81

With “As It Lays,” composer Jane McNealy delivers a smooth, evocative piece that transports listeners straight to the heart of 1980s urban nostalgia. This laid-back instrumental rides on warm piano and bass lines, creating a soundtrack fit for lazy afternoons and slow-motion scenes of roller skating through Central Park.

What gives “As It Lays” its special charm isn’t just the music — it’s the story behind its creation. McNealy reveals, “I wrote these songs using software operating in DOS. That’s how long ago it was!” Before Mac became the creative industry standard, McNealy coded her compositions line by line, working for three intense days and nights to master the technology. Rhythm parts were created with an Oberheim drum machine, adding a vintage, analog groove to the mix.

This track is more than a song — it’s a time capsule, a reflection of musical innovation and resilience. “As It Lays” lives in that rare space where tech meets soul, delivering a vibe that’s both retro and timeless.
